Lucas Williams, aka Lucas MiniatureArt, is a UK-based figure painter who first captured our attention with his impressive work during one of our workshops. Since then, we’ve been following his journey and have been truly inspired by his “Painting a Bust Each Day” challenge, which he undertook throughout January. The event showcased a remarkable array of high-quality finishes, inventive designs, and innovative concepts, demonstrating a level of skill and understanding that is rarely seen. Lucas is quickly becoming one of the most watched figure painters worldwide, admired by artists of all skill levels. He dedicates much of his time to teaching students and sharing his expertise through online discussions, social media, and at conventions and shows.

This weekend workshop is designed to help students master the art of painting compelling skin tones, embracing expressive brushwork, and bringing their figures to life. Participants will develop a strong understanding of anatomy while also exploring and refining their personal style and artistic voice. Students will paint the Diego Ramirez bust, designed by Juan Sans Elminiaturista and sculpted by Ivan Mata.

CLASS STRUCTURE

• Skin – We’ll focus on rendering skin—bringing it to life by capturing its material qualities and adding character. The goal is to learn how to depict skin realistically and vibrantly, giving your figures depth and personality.
• Conceptualising – This segment will explore how to conjure a compelling idea or moment for your model to inhabit. Developing a strong concept provides direction and soul to your painting. We’ll also discuss the importance of cultivating artistic solitude—creating space to paint authentically, in your own style, and pushing your personal artistic voice.
• Brushstrokes – When painting expressively, there’s no one perfect brush—each behaves differently and leaves its own marks. This section will introduce various techniques to help you approach your desired outcome and demystify the mark-making process. We’ll also highlight how a solid understanding of anatomy can inform and enhance your brushwork.
