Liam Hearne is an experienced, full-time miniature painter and tutor with a deep passion for the artistic aspects of the hobby. Over the years, he has earned several accolades, including Golden Demon and SMC awards, specialising in display-quality miniatures. He has also served as a judge for multiple competitions, including the Fen Model Show. Liam is the owner and creator of Phoenix Miniature Art and dedicates much of his time to teaching and sharing his knowledge with fellow hobbyists through workshops, demonstrations, and community events. He takes great pleasure in helping painters develop their skills—whether mastering core techniques or perfecting advanced display methods.
This weekend workshop offers you the perfect opportunity to learn from one of the UK’s leading lights in display level painting. The focus will be on understanding how to create texture and its importance in developing freehand designs. Students will be guided through the key stages of creating a freehand pattern while honing their brush control and accuracy.

- Understanding the importance of creating texture to imitate materials – 1 hour (Theory)
- Understanding the link between freehand and texture – 30 Minutes (Theory)
- The dangers of Saturation in realism – 30 Minutes (Theory)
- Understanding brushmarks and Opacity – 1 hour (Theory)
- Painting subtle texture and the power of hard marks – 2 hours (Demo and Practice)
- Painting extreme texture and integrating and softening brushmarks -2 hours (Demo and Practice)
CLASS STRUCTURE – Day 2
- Creating outlines + Maximising brush control – 30 minutes (Demo)
- Proportions and Positioning, a strong foundation for freehand – 2hours (Demo and Practice)
- Creating texture in freehand – 2 hours (Demo and Practice)
- Integrating freehand into your piece – 2 hours (Demo and Practice)
- Free Painting – rest of the day
